You may want a dental implant because you have lost some of your teeth, either through trauma (when teeth are knocked out) or due to decay, gum disease or old age. As a result they will need to be replaced, both for aesthetic and functional reasons.
Dental implants are now becoming a more popular treatment to replace missing teeth as they provide a longer-term solution, slow down bone loss and preserve nearby healthy tooth tissue. Eating, speaking and even general self-esteem can be greatly affected due to a missing tooth and dental implants can significantly help to improve quality of life and self-confidence- helping you to feel happy about smiling again!
There are great advantages to choosing a dental implant for tooth replacement as your missing teeth can be replaced without affecting or altering the adjacent teeth. Furthermore, because dental implants integrate into the bone structure, they are very stable and can have the look and feel of your own teeth.
Dental implants are a lot less scary than they sound. It’s really only a replacement tooth root constructed from titanium, which provides a strong foundation for a fixed or removable replacement tooth that is made to match your natural teeth. An extension (known as an abutment) is then fixed securely to the implant so that a new dental crown can added, this will provide you with a fully functioning set of natural looking teeth that will last a lifetime!
When you arrive at The Dental Studio, one of our surgeons will examine the area to be considered for the dental implant and make a clinical assessment of whether you are suitable for treatment.
On your treatment day and if the insertion of implants is relatively straight forward it usually only takes around one or two hours. Following this, the implants will require some time to integrate with the jaw bone. This can take between 3 and 6 months depending on where they have been fitted.
Temporary restoration and full dentures can be worn throughout the recovery process until it is possible to fit the final crown. Long term care is vital and you will need to make regular check-ups with your treating surgeon at The Dental Studio.
